There is a notice at litespeed about a new homework:

Dear Secondary One Geography students

This is an annoucement for the March Holiday Research Assignment that you have been informed to check and start doing during the March holidays. Please pass the message to your classmates and your friends in other classes and get them to read this notice.

Objective of the assignment:

Research and find real life examples of landform around the world in preparation for the new topic that we will be covering in Term 2. This will help you come to class with some prior knowledge of these landforms as we discover the wonder of the "mysterious" creation of landforms around the world.

Task for this assignment:

  1. Read through Chapter 8 of your textbook (Secondary 1 TB Earth: Our Home 1)
  2. Find an example for each of the landform you have read up on, on page 80 of your textbook. Take note of the name of the landforms, the country it is locate and any interesting facts about the landform.
  3. Find an example for each type of volcanoes you see on page 86-87 of your textbook (active, dormant, extinct)
  4. Find a case study on a volcanic eruption that has taken place. The case study should include some background information on the volcano, the consequences of a volcanic eruption (i.e. how were the people/places affected by the volcanic eruption). You may want to refer to the case study on Mount Merapi in your textbook on how a case study should look like.
  5. You are strongly encouraged to print out some pictures on the landforms you have found. They can be black and white in colour. If you do not have a printer at home, save it in a thumbdrive and print it out from the MRL. Alternatively, you can do a sketch/drawing for them. (A picture speaks a thousand words!)

Some sources that may be helpful

Do visit the school library (MRL) or the National Library Board for information ( there are plenty of such books in the library especially in the reference section)

http://mrnussbaum.com/wlandforms.htm (click on the red dots on the map to read a short description on the landforms)

http://www.harcourtschool.com/activity/typesofland/typesofland.html (click on the labels and it will bring you to one example of the landform that can be found in US)

http://www.platetectonics.com/globe/visibleearth.asp (you can search for landforms using keyword in the search engine at the top left hand corner)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A28303968 ( a write-up on one of the most dramatic volcanic eruption that took place in Italy in AD 79 where a town was buried)

http://volcano.oregonstate.edu/volcanoes/index.html ( this website will bring you to the volcanoes around the world, you can even click on the FAQ section to find out some interesting information on how scientist actually predict an eruption)

You should complete your research and bring them to class for discussion on the first week on school during your Geography lessons.

Happy learning!
